Fish Tank wtaer has gone brown and plants died. 24″ Tank with 18Watt Bulb. Have tried fertilizer – any idea’s?
The tank is 24″ and standard size. I’m in Aus so I have no idea how many Gallons it is. After putting the plants in the water started turing green and the plands lost there colour and died. I have Chiclids and Bristle nose Catfish who seem to take an intrest in dead leaves. Not sure what has caused water to go browny – doesn’t look like much alge. may be caused by Chlorphil from dead plants going into the water ?? maybe i need more light ?? I mixed fertalizer in when I first put in the gravel.
I also note that some of the plants had begun to shoot out roots before the died
Will a low Ph level in a freshwater tank cause more Algae?
My alge level stays at about 6.4. Ive tried to get it up to at least 7.0 but just cant. Ive tried everything i know of. Ive kept fish tanks for a long time and never had a problem with this. I am also having a problem with the alge in the tank. Ive got another question posted about that. Since we have moved into a new house in a different location with different water i just cant get the Ph up. We have had fish that we owned for a very long time die and new ones that have been put in die. The only fish in the tank are these 2 catfish looking things that used to stay at the bottom before the bala sharks died. Since they have doubled in size and taken over the tank. We have had them for about 4 years and they have made it through the good and bad times…..seems like they are the only fish that are strong enough to survive all the mess the fish tank is in right now.
Anyway, what are some good suggestions for raising the Ph??
I wanted to have a couple Oscars and that’s the reason i started trying to get the Ph right because i know they like a higher Ph. Getting my tank to 7.2 or 7.4 would be ideal. This started about 6 months ago after we moved into a new house and the catfish looking things have taken over!! I dont know what to do with them now. I dont know if i can put Oscar’s in with them or not?!?
The “catfish looking things” are about 6″ long. They have a long thick body with 2 fins behind their head that are about 1/2″ long and 2 more smaller ones on their body and about a 1″ tail fin. I dont know what they are. The have “catfish” looking heads. One is black and one is white.
How can i control my fish tank’s Alge problem?
I have a 40 gallon freshwater tank. We did have 5 Bala Sharks and 2 catfish looking things that stayed at the bottom…and one HUGE sucker fish. We moved…..lost the bala sharks (they were BIG..had them for about 2 years) The catfish looking things lived and we still have them….they took over the tank and doubled in size. This is when the alge problem started. We got rid of the HUGE alge eater after the bala sharks died (i am sure that was a mistake) we have since put in 2 more smaller sucker fish and one is already dead. I clean the tank and 3 days later is is cloudy, green and just looks terriable. The PH level stays a little low since we moved into the new house….i spent about a month trying everything i could to get it up but couldnt.shells, chemiclas, etc..We have white gravel with a roman collesium in the middle of the tank…It’s pretty big so there is nothing else. We have a Whisper power filter. Keeping my tank clean wasnt a problem till we moved. Im FRUSTRATED!!
help with my fishes?
I just happened to read the answers to the other questions posted here and since i too have a fish tank i would like to know 2-3 things
1. my tank lights are always on 24 hrs – last 4 years or so… do i need to put them off in the nights – i put them off only while cleaning the fishtank which depends on how dirty the water looks.
2. i have 3 big catfishes and and 3-4 fishes of the goldfish variety, i just read about the sucker ( plecostomus ) cleaning the tanks… can i add that to my fish tank, earlier i had many fishes goldfish, suckers, angel fish but they all died one by one.
3. I also read about people adding snails and frogs to their fish tanks… tell me how helpful would that be
Thanks,
Does a fish tank have a shelf life if it’s not being used?
I have a 300 gallon aquarium that’s never been used. It’s about 4 years old. Does anything have to be done before filling it with water? I’d hate the corners to let loose after I fill it.
