How do I deal with hillbilly in-laws who are ignorant and proud of it?
I’m 44 years old. I’ve been married to my wife for 10 years: we have 2 daughters, ages 5 and 2. Our youngest has developmental disabilities. We break our backs for our kids.
My wife’s folks always call us “you kids”, and they’re always tearing me down to my wife because I’m from the North, I don’t deer hunt, my wife(their daughter)works also, I’m an artist(but I make an OK living), I’m Presbyterian, and I have a beer now and then.
Short of brainwashing or alien abduction, how the heck do I get these nimrods off my case?

Just try and have a family meeting and then don’t sweat the small stuff remember when life gives you a lemon make lemonade I know that may be hard but try it and also if you are a little religious pray because prayer changes things!

You should have a talk with them and try to express how you feel. I know the type of people you’re talking about, trust me. They should respect your upbringing and prerogatives, regardless of where you’re from. Just let them know straight up, what bothers you.

Unfortunately, you can’t.
When people change, they do it themselves.
You have to just get used to them. And be ready for everytime you see them that they’re going to say something ignorant. You’re doing the best raising your family – that’s all that’s important!
Remind yourself that at least they created your wife.

Well you could Pray about it… but in the end sometimes people never change. I recommend Loving them anyway. I mean all you can do is all you can do….right? So if you are doing all you can do and God has heard your worries via prayer then let it be….sounds like you guys are doing all right to me….keep your chin up!

you can’t change them….love your wife and daughters and stop letting them get to you….they are who they are and you can only control how you feel….so ignore their bad behavior and be yourself, love your life, love your wife and kids…be happy.

Ask them, “Would you be happier if I just showed you to the door? I mean, since being in my presence bothers you so much I have made a decision that you should NEVER have to put up with me or my family again.”
See what happens then.

OMGss! I just read a couple of your posts! You are VERY well educated. My dear, I think perhaps because of that your in-laws are intimidated by you. Don’t dumb down or anything, but perhaps talking heart to heart with them might help.

talk to your wife about your frustrations without saying “your stupid family”… just tell her you dont like the way they make you feel and that it seems they are always criticizing you.
you could consider moving if that is an option, or you could just see your inlaws less. They seem to be judging you based to STUPID things because they are just trying to find differences….find the similarities and point them out when you see them, and maybe they will mellow out.
My sister’s inlaws are like that, and she moved her family to another state.

You don’t if they haven’t gotten off your case by now darling they won’t. Talk to your wife and you two present a united front either they cut the bull or you cut them out of your lives. You don’t need that hillbilly hogwash rubbing off on your kids. Their daddy should be their hero and if they tear you down to your wife they will start tearing you down to your kids. You have enough to deal with raising your babies then to deal with that nonsense.
