i have a yellow spotted salamander and i think that she is pregnant i just found her in my pool im not sure why her anus is so bloated but she appears to have eggs if these are eggs will they hatch she was like this when i found her so does that meen the male or a male would have already mated with her? and will she lay them in my aquarium id lioke to keep them or some if i could i have put a worm in the tank but she hasnt eaten it yet its only been like an hour though. so pleese get back to me on the egg part and if it is a good idea to have her lay them in water i assume thats where they ley them i the wild?

Actually by the way you describe it you have found a male Ambystoma maculatum. Right by their anal vent is larger in size during this breading season. If you pick them up make sure your hands are super wet as to prevent the oils from your hands from getting onto their skin. If you have collected the salamander it may night eat for you. They are generally not good pets. It may be stressed out. I would suggest to release to the same place you found, but if you must keep him make sure he has a place to hide. They like logs with a variety of food. Try meal worms and crickets as well.

There has to be a male around to fertilize the eggs as she lays them. She will prob eat the eggs if there is no male.

yes they would normally lay in water but that isnt how they are suppose to be kept, they should be kept on land for themost part and supplied with an AREA of water in breeding season, not the whole tank. otherwise they should be kept like tiger salamanders. a swollen area near the base of the tail generally means its a male, females tend to be wider and more pear shped when carrying eggs.
