how to make homemade aquarium decorations?

how to make homemade aquarium decorations?

I'm decorating my newt's ten gallon tank with bright or neon colors. I don't want to keep buying all tthe decorations from the store because that gets really expensive. Does anyone have an idea for how to make safe, bright-colored aquarium decor from stuff at home?

You can make caves for your fish using PVC pipe and gravel or rocks using aquarium safe silicone to glue them together.I just made some for my cichlids last week and they turned out nice but I am not sure it was much cheaper by the time I bought the rocks, gravel pipes and silicone .Just make sure you get the silicone at a fish place as the ones at hardware stores can have stuff added that would kill your fish. This web site has some good ideas for making things safe for a fish tank.

This is a really bad idea! The items you buy are specially made for aquarium use and are safe. Things lying around your house are not safe, they could have chemical residue you're not even aware of on them. You can use glass, scrubbed well with hot water, and nothing else. Not broken glass, but marbles, maybe a bright or unusually shaped drinking glass, small decorative bottle, something like that. I've heard of people using very small, unused terra cotta flowerpots. Unused only, as the chemicals in potting soil can leach into the pots and be dangerous. Do not use wood, rocks, plastic, or artificial plants, unless made for aquarium use. If you can think of anyone who used to have an aquarium and stopped, see if they have any decorations left. Sometimes people will have aquariums for sale at yard sales, you could ask if you could just buy the decorations. Ditto for Goodwill. Visit a neighborhood pet store, and see if they might have any decorations "in the back" they aren't using, that they would sell cheap.
I bought flat marbles for a dollar a bag at Dollar Tree to redecorate my Betta bowls.
Anything you get should be well scrubbed with hot water and a new toothbrush you bought just for this purpose. Even boiling things that can take the heat is a good idea. You want to make sure you aren't introducing any bacteria or chemicals into your tank.
These are my best ideas. Good luck!

I wouldn't if I were you. I wouldn't even buy the ones from the pet store either. Anything painted or colored has the potential to leech toxins into the water.
Glass is inert so it is safe to decorate with glass and it looks cool and is brightly colored. Maybe you could find a glass sculpture or neet wine glass or something.

Have a look in your local second hand stores or garage sales for used "aquarium safe" decorations. You can pick the stuff up for pennies.
